"I always thought I had to work out hours a day to feel better. But Scott showed me how just a 1/2 hour a day, a few days a week, could really make a difference!" Barbara M., NJ

GOALS: specific objectives to accomplish as
a result of a lifestyle change. These objectives are definable.

Identifying realistic and attainable goals give you the best chance of being successful. Choose goals that are neither too hard or too easy. Failure or boredom is discouraging.

Beginner exercises should concentrate on short-term goals which are much easier to attain. Longer term goals take a lot of time to achieve and can be very discouraging for first-time exercisers. Take advantage of the success derived from the completion of weekly short-term goals. You can easily build the confidence it takes by doing this and continue to set longer term goals for yourself.

As you progress successfully through several short-term goals, you will gain the confidence and motivation to keep progressing forward making more long-term goal projections with more specific performance goals. You also will want to consider maintenance goals, which are goals with the intent of keeping (maintaining) the health and wellness you have acquired.

Before beginning with any goal setting, however, you should always take a self-assesment of your attitudes and previous experiences with a physically active exercise program. The knowledge of what you have experienced in the past and the obstacles that hindered your success will play a key role in determining what will work for you now. Several areas of concern will provide more insight to unlocking your potential for success. Below are a few samples of questions used to evaluate your feelings concerning physical activity. The answers will help determine the specific reasons why you do or do not participate in regular physical activity.

I should do physical activity regularly for my health. Strongly Disagree / Strongly Agree
I like to do outdoor activities Strongly Disagree / Strongly Agree
I like to see how my physical abilities compare to others Strongly Disagree / Strongly Agree
Competition is a good way to make physical activity fun. Strongly Disagree / Strongly Agree
Exercise offers me the opportunity to meet other people. Strongly Disagree / Strongly Agree

The results of a longer self-assessment provide insight to these dimensions of why you may or may not participate. Ready To Exercise can help give you a self-assessment so that your next diet and exercise program will be a successful one. Click Here to find out more!
