"It used to be intimidating for me to walk into a sports equipment store. The salespeople would be confusing, and I was never satisfied with what I bought. But now I have the information I need to make an informed decision about the right equipment for me." Barbara M., NJ

Five Stages of Change:
Stage 3, Preparation

So now we have gone from ''Thinking About it'' to ''Acting On It''. This stage is one of the most important yet the most overlooked. I refer to this stage as the ''Empowerment Stage''. This is where you will become proactive, involving yourself with building knowledge in several areas that are important to understanding the concepts of exercise, realistic goal setting, motivation and exercise adherence tips, self monitoring, etc.

Now when we begin involving ourselves with ''Acting On It'' you should concentrate on small changes and with every little success you will then grow your determination to change. An example might be that you decide to experiment with starting to take the stairs instead of the elevator at work a few times of week. I recommend that people take time in this stage, even as long as a few months if needed until they feel their determination increasing along with their self-esteem and perception of control
